The deadliest mass shooting in the country’s
history occurred this past Sunday. On Sunday, June 12, 2016, 50 people were
killed and 53 people were injured. This event took place in Orlando, FL at a
gay bar called Pulse. Law enforcement officials identified the shooter as Omar
Mateen, a 29-year-old American citizen who lived in Port St. Lucie, FL. According to officials the father of the shooter
said his son had become very angry when he came across seeing two men kissing
in downtown Miami and authorities are calling this an act of terrorism. In this
article author Jonathan Capehart says,” the nation has been through this so
many times in the last decade that we might as well lower our flags to
half-mast on a permanent basis.” These incidents keep on happening in our nation
and it needs to stop! We cannot be living with the thought that someone will
come and shoot someone at any time or place. This horrid event will “reignite the gun debate”
like Capehart mentioned. This is definitely true, as Americans we need to
implement laws so that lunatic people like him and previous shooters don’t have
easy access to guns.
The LBGT community celebrated pride month, and
for them to have to live with this mass shooting is just a devastating blow for
the community in America. After this incident, I know Americans will be more
aware of the handgun laws and more aware of their surroundings. Like Cape hart
said “one things is clear, with the shocking toll killers with guns are racking
up, we all must take care.”
How
safe do you currently feel in our country? What are your thoughts on handguns
and the laws?
